ARTISTS & THINGS THAT INSPIRE ME! (click images to be taken to websites & posts)

I find that looking at other peoples work is a big help to me whenever I'm struggling to come up with any ideas for my work.  Here is what I've been looking at to help with my ideas and shape my work into what it is:

David Fullarton.

I've always liked the idea of incorporating text and images together in a collage like way. I like to include humor in my work and I think that incorporating text and image are a great way of doing so.

I discovered Fullarton's work in college and have taken great inspiration since.

Bedwyr Williams.

I discovered Williams' work, again in college during my foundation year. He came to give us a talk about his work which I found very interesting. He was also a pupil on the foundation course and has become a very successful artist since. Again here is another artist who incorporates words and images together, and also has an satirical element to his work.

Jim Moir. (aka Vic Reeves)

I used to love watching Shooting Stars with my mam and dad when it was on telly, and thought that Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer were absolutely hilarious...The surreal like comedy definitely had a positive effect on me creatively and is something I try to incorporate into my own work. I always thought the drawings included in some of the shows segments were really interesting and funny, however it took me  a while to realise that they were drawings done by Vic Reeves.

I find his art style very interesting and is always a great source of inspiration when I'm feeling a bit stuck with things.

(Kinda wanna buy that Morrissey print...kinda don't wanna spend £550 though)

Also, just for laughs, here is one of my favourite sketches from Shooting Stars:

Here is an artist I discovered not too long ago on Instagram. I like artists who don't take things too seriously and like to have fun with their work. This is a great example of an artist who doesn't take himself too seriously and as a result produces really funny and different pieces of work. I take great inspiration from this artist in my own work, and in how I write about my work. I think that humor (when appropriate) is important and makes things a lot less dull.

Javier Mayoral.

Here's another really interesting artist I found on Instagram. I find Mayoral's work really interesting and again really funny. I take inspiration from the incorporation of text and image and the dry and witty humor within some of the pieces.

David Shrigley.

David Shrigley is yet another artist I discovered in my foundation year. I was instantly drawn to the humor and eccentricity of the pieces he produces. I've mentioned Shrigley a lot but he was very important to me when it came to trying out different things within my work, mainly the incorporation of text and image in order to create humor. I have since bought a lot of his art books and prints and he is a great inspiration to me.

Hen bapur newydd.

Hen bapur newydd translates to old newspapers in case you were wondering.

Being Welsh and a Welsh speaker, the welsh language is very important to me and I like to incorporate it into my work wherever possible. The artist above shows a great example of the use of words and collage in order to create an interesting piece of work. Again this artist sometimes creates humorous pieces by making jokes with the words, you'd have to be Welsh in order to understand most of them though.

Slightly different from the rest of the work I've been looking at so far, but here's ANOTHER artist I discovered on Instagram (it has a lot of great artists). What attracted me to this work was the cute drawings and the bold colours used in the pieces. I think these are great examples of illustration and are really lovely to look at.

Some Insta-ation (sorry)

Comedy that inspires me:

Comedy can be an important element in my work, I like to laugh, make jokes and not take things too seriously, the world is serious enough as it is. Various shows and clips that I've seen over the years have shaped my humor and my creativity into what it is today. Here are some examples of shows that have had a great impact on me:
Vic & Bob, Shooting Stars...need I say more?!
Father Ted, a little 'offensive' at times but that's what makes comedy so brilliant, the edginess of it all. I find that this type of humor can lead to interesting pieces of work.
Pobol y Chyff was a comedy on S4C, back in the day about two Welsh learners, Frank and Frank. I find it absolutely hilarious as they're basically taking the piss (lightheartedly) out of Welsh learners. You wouldn't find anything like this out there  now, which is a shame because this is the funniest thing I have ever seen on Welsh television.
